details:
Interested in working for the Department of Justice or doing appellate litigation in D.C.? Then attend a special brown-bag lunch with Patty Stemler, Chief of the Department of Justice's Criminal Appellate Section, and Tom Goldstein, founding partner of the D.C. law firm Goldstein & Howe. Ms. Stemler has argued and written briefs for many Supreme Court and court of appeals cases. Mr. Goldstein runs a firm devoted exclusively to Supreme Court work, and has been described by Washington Monthly as "the best Supreme Court litigator in Washington."
The brown-bag lunch is at 12:30 on Wednesday, October 6. Please e-mail Nicholas Stephanopoulos if you're interested in attending.
Spots will go fast, so be sure to e-mail quickly.
Several of you have asked whether it might be possible to videotape the David Boies event. We can do this, and A/V services will lend us the video camera and tripod. But we need a volunteer to operate the camera. If you are that person, please email Joey Fishkin.
This is for David Boies' speech tomorrow (Tuesday) at 6pm. All of us in ACS would really appreciate your help. Very little technical expertise required. Please email back today if interested.
You may be wondering about the rainbow pins many YLS students are wearing today and over the next 10 days during FIP. They are a gesture of support for Yale's non-discrimination policy. Here's what's going on (from one of the student organizers):
The Defense Department has again decided to try to prove that military might trumps our school's policy of non-discrimination by sending JAG (Air Force, Army, and Navy) recruiters to interview at FIP.
We are responding with our own statement: we will not tolerate discrimination being forced into our school over the students', faculty's, and administration's unified opposition. The strongest way to send this message is to REFUSE TO INTERVIEW WITH JAG ON CAMPUS.
As you know, the non-discrimination policy prohibits employers who discriminate based on sexual orientation from recruiting through FIP and SIP. JAG recruiters have decided not to play by the same rules as every other prospective employer by signing up for FIP although the military openly discriminates against lesbians, gays and bisexuals with "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". Although the school's policy has been suspended with regard to the military, it is OUR job to keep it intact in practice. In past years, JAG has not had success in recruiting through FIP; their presence is solely to show their muscle. Their inability to recruit through FIP and SIP has been in large part due to our determination to keep Yale Law School's non-discrimination policy active.
Please join us in showing DOD that our school's non-discrimination policy is still vital:
1. Don't interview with JAG through FIP. If you are interested in working with JAG over the summer, please contact them on your own, NOT through FIP.
2. Wear a rainbow pin or sticker during FIP. We plan to hand out pins and stickers at the law school and the hotel. If you have a pin from last year, please wear it.
For more information on any of the above, or if you would like to help out, please email Fadi Hanna or Janna Freed.
